Healthcare and Services Stocks Lag Friday as XLV Slips and IYC Stays Flat

Two colleagues at a brokerage firm sit behind six large monitors depicting stock market movements and trading data, studying the action.

Healthcare and services stocks trailed the broader market in Friday afternoon trading, with healthcare standing out as the weakest S&P 500 sector and services showing little momentum. The session's underperformance was reflected both in individual large-cap names and in sector exchange-traded funds, including the Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) and the iShares U.S. Consumer Services ETF (IYC).

Healthcare Sector Underperforms on Friday

Among S&P 500 sectors, healthcare was the weakest group in afternoon trading, down 0.1%. Within the sector, Incyte Corporation (INCY) and Gilead Sciences Inc (GILD) were among the notable laggards, each lower by 1.9% on the day.

Sector performance at the ETF level pointed in the same direction. Among healthcare ETFs, the Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) was down 0.3% on the day, though still up 8.31% year to date. Over the same year-to-date period, Incyte Corporation was up 16.37%, while Gilead Sciences Inc had gained 19.86%.

That contrast is notable: a stock can lag on a given day even while maintaining strong gains for the year. In this case, Friday's weakness in INCY and GILD appears more consistent with sector-level softness than with a broader reversal in their year-to-date trends. Combined, the two stocks account for approximately 3.4% of XLV's underlying holdings, giving them some influence on the fund's daily move without making them dominant drivers.

Services Sector Shows Limited Momentum

The services sector was the next weakest area of the market, effectively flat in afternoon trading. While the group avoided an outright decline at the sector level, several individual names posted more pronounced losses.

Among larger services stocks, NVR Inc. (NVR) fell 2.9% and Reddit Inc (RDDT) declined 2.5%. One ETF closely tracking services-related companies, the iShares U.S. Consumer Services ETF (IYC), was up 0.5% intraday but remained down 7.33% year to date.

The underlying stock performance has been notably weaker over the same period. NVR Inc. was down 18.41% year to date, while Reddit Inc was down 36.57%. NVR represents approximately 0.3% of IYC's holdings, which helps explain why a sizeable move in the stock does not necessarily translate into a comparable move for the ETF.

What Friday's Sector Moves Suggest

Friday's trading highlights an important distinction between sector breadth and individual-stock volatility:

  • Healthcare was the weakest sector overall, with both constituent stocks and the sector ETF moving lower.
  • Services was flat at the sector level, even as selected stocks posted sharper declines.
  • ETF moves were more muted than single-stock moves because diversified funds spread exposure across many holdings.
  • Year-to-date performance remains mixed, with healthcare names still showing solid gains while several services names remain under pressure.

For market participants tracking sector rotation, that pattern matters. A weak sector ETF can indicate broader selling pressure across an industry group, while a flat or positive ETF alongside falling component stocks may suggest that weakness is concentrated rather than widespread.

How to Read S&P 500 Analyst Leader Screens and Dividend Yield

Analyst leader stories can highlight S&P 500 stocks that currently stand out in broker or analyst screens. Dividend yield helps show the income side of the story, but it should be reviewed with payout consistency, valuation, and recent stock movement.
The signal is most useful when analyst views are reviewed with valuation, earnings expectations, sector context, dividend policy, and recent performance. Investors should treat the dividend yield angle as context rather than a standalone signal.
