Alpha Natural Resources supplies and exports metallurgical coal for use in the steel-making process and supplies thermal coal to electric utilities and manufacturing industries. Co. has two reportable segments: Eastern Coal Operations, which consists of the mines in Northern and Central Appalachia, Co.'s coal brokerage activities and its road construction business; and Western Coal Operations, which consists of two Powder River Basin mines in Wyoming. Co.'s other category includes equipment sales and repair operations; terminal services; the leasing of mineral rights, among others. As of Dec 31 2012, Co. controlled approx. 4.60 billion tons of proven and probable coal reserves.
