Empire District Electric is an operating public utility engaged in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity. Co. has three segments: electric, which operates in Missouri, and includes the provision of water service; gas, which is engaged in the distribution of natural gas in Missouri via Co.'s Empire District Gas Company subsidiary; and other, which consists of its fiber optics business. As of Dec 31 2011, Co.'s electric operations and gas operations served approximately 166,500 and 44,000 customers, respectively. As of Dec 31 2011, Co. supplied electricity to 120 incorporated communities and natural gas to 45 communities and 315 transportation customers.
