August 20, 2011 - If you purchased a great daily deal online, perhaps with Groupon, LivingSocial or Tippr, and you can't use it, you may simply be stuck. Many online coupons are nonrefundable...but help is arriving. New businesses are letting consumers sell their unused deals. So if you can't take that vacation or dine at the local restaurant before the deal expires you have some options. Here's a rundown of the major players, in alphabetical order.
TIP: Before signing on any of these sites, read its FAQ section and look for information about a buyer's protection plan, if it has one.
Unused Coupons
www.CoupRecoup.com. On its website, management states that it is "the Craigs list for Groupons." Most of the deals are in fact from Groupon with a handful from Living Social and Restaurant.com. It handles deals for local restaurants, salons, concerts and entertainment as well as vacation packages. You can post your deal for sale or if you missed a deal, track it down and buy it (or something similar).
Posting, buying and selling are free. As we went to press, someone was selling a coupon for 3 nights in Las Vegas at 64% off. Caution: There are no guarantees.
www.DealChicken.com. This operation started in 2010 in Phoenix and is expanding to 50 cities. It cultivates the best local deals and delivers them to you by email...things to do and see, where to eat and buy - all at a deep discount.
Behind the scenes is the local Gannet newspaper and/or TV station. It offers refunds up until the deal expires.
www.DealsGoRound.com. This company's motto is "Where daily deals get a second chance." It maintains that it's easy to get cash for deals you can't use before they expire or to buy a coupon. Click on "Deal Wallet" for help in keeping all your deal certificates in one place.
This site has a solid protection plan - every seller is cross-checked with PayPal. If you purchase a deal here management guarantees its authenticity. On the other hand, if after 60 days of purchase and before the expiration date it turns out that the deal is fraudulent or was previously redeemed, they "will refund your payment in full and send our muscle out after the dirtbag seller!"
www.Lifesta.com. Th is not a daily deal site; it is a marketplace where you can buy and sell deals from other sites. It uses Amazon Payments and does not collect credit card of bank information. If you discover your purchase is not genuine or has been used before, they will help you get a refund.
www.SmartySaver.com. One section in this multi-faceted savings site is devoted to buying and selling coupons. Recently it added a helpful feature for those seeking deals. Each morning, it collects the best deals from daily deal websites, including Groupon, LivingSocial, Tippr and others and then sends them to subscribers for free. In other words, you get just one email instead of dozens.
