The rail system is made up of more than 16,000 route miles owned by Norfolk Southern and about 5,000 route miles trackage rights, which allow the company to use tracks owned by other railroads. Norfolk Southern transports coal and general merchandise, including automotive products and chemicals.
- Burlington Northern: is the second-largest railroad operator in the US, behind Union Pacific. BNSF makes tracks through 28 states in the West, Midwest, and Sunbelt regions of the US and in two Canadian provinces.
